ASTUHA (Association of Tutors of Handicapped)
began as a small program in Jeddayel village of Byblos (Jbeil)
in October 2001. With the vision of a parents who want to help
their children and others like them who live with autism or
cerebral palsy, not accepted by other centers for the severe
degrees of their mental handicap.
Those parents gathered, and formed an association
named association of tutors of handicapped children, as they
versioned a program giving their children the right to survive,
receive care, special education and rehabilitation and help
them become productive members of society.
However, when the families many of whom are
quite poor located a small house to serve as the center, neighbors
rejected the plan saying they don’t wish to be near the
children. With no options left, Christian’s family decided
to give their own home for the program.
The center known as Christian’s house
out of gratitude to the family, serves many children, some of
them are being, rehabilitated to reenter in the community and
some still under individual therapy program. This project is
organized and run mainly by mothers of the children served,
in collaboration of many specialized doctors and workers: psychiatric
and neurologist, psychologist guide and observe the occupational
therapies.
